Abstract

Abstract
This article explores the presence and role of critical realism in organization and management research, presenting it as an integrative paradigm that transcends the limitations of positivism and interpretivism. Grounded in Roy Bhaskar's work, critical realism divides reality into three layers—real (structures and mechanisms), actual (events), and empirical (experiences)—and emphasizes the interplay between structure and agency. The article traces the emergence of this approach in organizational studies and examines its ontological assumptions (layered ontology and open systems), epistemological principles (fallible and mediated knowledge), and methodological frameworks (methodological pluralism and retroductive reasoning). It then compares research strategies (inductive, deductive, abductive, and retroductive) and highlights distinctions between structure, mechanism, event, and experience. The empirical robustness of findings is ensured through systematic processes such as event description, structural mapping, and empirical validation. Methodological innovations, from Bhaskar’s RRREIC model to the practical approaches of Danermark and Wynn & Williams, provide operational tools for uncovering causal mechanisms. Ultimately, the article underscores critical realism’s emancipatory potential in addressing contemporary organizational complexities, positioning it as a compelling alternative to traditional paradigms. By integrating theoretical depth and practical application, critical realism enriches organizational research.
Introduction
Critical realism offers a way to explain organizational phenomena by examining the conditions and causal mechanisms that generate them. Drawing on Roy Bhaskar’s stratified ontology, it distinguishes the real domain of structures and causal powers, the actual domain of events, and the empirical domain of experiences and observations. This article examines how critical realism has developed in organization and management research and how its philosophical commitments can guide empirical inquiry. It focuses on the move from describing organizational outcomes to explaining why they arise in particular contexts.
Case study
The article does not report an original case study. Instead, it draws on published organizational research to illustrate how a critical realist analysis can work. Studies of information system adoption, organizational learning, workplace power, and change show that similar events may have different outcomes across settings. For example, the introduction of a technology does not, by itself, determine whether employees adopt it. Existing routines, managerial authority, available resources, and employees’ interpretations may enable or constrain its use. Such examples demonstrate why researchers need to examine the interaction of structures, agency, and context rather than infer causation from observed outcomes alone.
Materials and Methods
This is a conceptual and methodological review. It compares the ontological, epistemological, and methodological assumptions of critical realism and examines four forms of reasoning: induction, deduction, inference to the best explanation, and retroduction. It then considers methodological contributions associated with Bhaskar, Sayer, Danermark and colleagues, Ackroyd and Fleetwood, and Wynn and Williams. Particular attention is given to the distinction between structures, mechanisms, events, and experiences, and to the use of multiple forms of evidence when assessing proposed explanations. Building on this comparison, the article outlines a proposed four-phase, thirteen-step framework covering problem identification, research design, data collection, and analysis and reporting.
Discussion and Results
The review identifies retroduction as central to critical realist inquiry: researchers ask what underlying conditions and mechanisms would have to exist for an observed event to occur. Because organizations are open systems, a mechanism may produce different outcomes, or no observable outcome, depending on the conditions in which it operates and its interaction with other mechanisms. Empirical patterns therefore provide starting points for explanation rather than conclusive proof of a single cause.
The methodological approaches reviewed translate this principle into research practices, including detailed event description, analysis of organizational structures and context, development of competing explanations, and assessment against evidence from multiple sources. The proposed thirteen-step framework brings these practices into a sequence intended to make critical realist research more transparent and usable. It remains a methodological proposal; the article does not empirically test whether the framework improves research quality. The review also identifies areas for further development, particularly the study of large-scale data and greater attention to organizational contexts outside Western settings.
Conclusion
Critical realism provides organization and management researchers with a coherent basis for connecting lived experience and observable events to the structures and mechanisms that may generate them. Its value lies in producing explanations that are sensitive to context, open to revision, and useful for examining persistent organizational problems. Future empirical studies can assess and refine the proposed framework across different organizational settings.
